Kitten time

This is Snacks.

If you follow me on social media you will have seen about a billion pictures of Snacks by now. But here’s her story if you missed it:

Our neighbours knocked the door at 9.30pm one night in May. The whole family stood there with this little kitten. She had appeared in their garden and refused to leave, and their dog wanted to eat her. They asked if we would put her in our garden and see if she would leave there. No worries, always happy to help a kitteh.kitten with big eyes

Those eyes though ❤

So we put her out the back and stood talking with the neighbours over the fence. The kitten was pretty thin. Her tail was all weird and a bit bald, which was really noticable as she had long hair. I started calling her Snacks as she looks like Bethany from Best Coast’s cat. We gave her some biscuits and said if she was still there in the morning then I’d take her to the vets to see if she had a microchip. I also posted on the lost and found pets pages. Someone must have been missing this cutie.

In the morning, she was still there.kitten outside

The vet said she was about 5/6 months old and had no microchip. They also said she was in heat or had just finished heat. I contacted the cat rescue charity but they wouldn’t take her because it was only one day. Even though she was a baby and at risk of boycats taking advantage. Not happy about that. I couldn’t keep her because Pickle would go nuts. So we went home and Snacks went back in the garden. I spoke to my neighbour again and she said she would speak to her friend who works with a small cat rescue. I had to go to uni that day as it was our final hand in for the year. I was there for 3 hours. In that time it went from “I can’t keep this cat” to “I have a new cat now”.

I rushed home because it started raining hard. We hadn’t had rain for a while and no way was I leaving a poor kitten out in the rain…

… but when I got home, she wasn’t there. I stood in the middle of the garden in the pouring rain calling “kitten!” but no kittens came. So I went inside, cuddled my big cats and cried for a bit.

Then my neighbour Emma knocked the door. She said that her friend had been round and they had tried to coax Snacks over so she could take her to the rescue. But Snacks wouldn’t leave my garden. She kept going back to the doormat. After her friend left, Emma was in the kitchen and there was a “meow” at the backdoor. Unfortunately, the dog heard it too and chased the cat. Both of them jumped over the back wall. Emma got the dog back over but said Snacks was still there. I said if she was then she was coming in and living with me.

I opened the kitchen door… Snacks walked right in. I cried again.

We made a cosy space for her in the back bedroom so that Pickle and Monty didn’t feel usurped. I de-fleaed and wormed all the cats the next day and a couple of days afterwards, Snacks had a bath because she stank. A lady from the cat charity came round to see how she was and if we needed any help fostering her. I said that if no one came forward to claim her then she had a home for life.

One month later, and with no one contacting us about her, I had her vaccinated and chipped. Then she went into heat again. OH MY WORD. I have never seen anything like it. Snacks sang for nearly 10 days solid. She sounded in pain but maybe that’s sexy to boycats. Every time you touched her she stuck her bum up in the air. She must have been so uncomfortable. I would put her to bed every night and she would go straight to sleep. Being a horny kitten is apparently exhausting! (there are videos of her singing and presenting on my Instagram).

As soon as heat was over, Snacks got spayed. kitten blep in cone

Best. Cone of Shame. Ever.

Nearly 4 months later, Snacks has settled right in here. She is very driven by food. She farts loudly when she gets excited about food. She doesn’t share food. She has put on lots of weight and all her fur has grown back. She looks so lovely.kitten in bed

Pickle and Monty are fine with her. Most of the time they ignore her and just sleep all day on their cushion. Snacks sometimes sits with Monty on the chair. Pickle hisses at her to let her know that Pickle is top cat. They don’t fight though.

So now I have 3 orange ones. It’s like she knew we were ginger-friendly. I am so glad that this little floof came when she did. She has provided a welcome distraction from all the uni vacation time, even if she has issues with the landing carpet. She follows me around like a duckling and kicks me in the head when she’s making biscuits on the blanket on the back of the sofa but then comes and curls up on me for hours. She accepts tummy tickles and loves to play. I had forgotten how different kittens are to older cats. She is better than TV. I love Snacks.

Did you miss me?

Hi.

It’s been a while, huh?

Let me catch you up…

  • We bought a house last April. It’s a wicked little house that looks like peach melba.Home Sweet Home
  • I quit conveyancing and became a student last September. I’ll be starting my second year of BA Interior Design at USW next month. This is one of the best things I ever did. Top 3, definitely. I love it so much. Except the summer holidays. They’re long and boring.IMG_20160919_085827
  • We got another cat! I’ll do a post about Snacks soon. She’s amazing.IMG_20170630_160101_681 1
  • I got a shed. I haven’t built it yet. Shed posts will happen.

In far weirder news, I have, somehow, been tricked into entering the Cardiff Half Marathon. What?? Who even am I? I have no business doing such a thing. And yet, I am doing this thing. For charity. I’ll do some update posts as to my progress. The race (ha! Race!) is 13.1 miles. I have done 3.3 miles so far. Go me! If you’re interested in giving a little incentive for me to actually start enjoying this task, then you can go here http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/BethanReesCDF

So, TL:DR – stuff that happened to me since David Bowie died.

An owlsome weekend

I had the most brilliant Bank Holiday weekend EVER.

On Saturday, we went to see owls. OWLS! Ant bought me a falconry experience for my birthday so we drove up to Forge (near Machynlleth) and it was amazing. This is me having a nice cwtch with my favourite owl ever in the whole wide world. Her name’s Mog:image

Mog is a little White Faced Scops Owl. You know, the ones that do that crazy thing when they feel threatened. She was adorable, even if she pooed on me.

Mog loved Ant too. Actually, all the owls like Ant. He’s like some sort of owl whisperer. I knew there was a good reason to keep him around, he attracts owls!image

On Sunday we had a little lie in (as much as the cats would allow) before walking to Riverside Market (because sausages) and had lunch at Pieminster. Coffee and pie on a Sunday – what more could a person ask for?! This was actually not the pie I ordered, but it’s the pie that I ate. I think it was actually nicer than the pie I ordered so I was pleased at the error!image

Many lovely new records have come to live with me in the last couple of weeks. This weekend I acquired the new Tigercub single, Neu 2, Suede and Gruff Rhys’ American Interior which is just bloody lovely. image

Yes, I do feel better

This may be a pretty poor return to blogging, but if I don’t actually do it on November 1st then NaBloPoMo will never happen.

I have spent much of the day [lies, about an hour] pondering something to write. I am still devoid of ideas so I’ll just post this…

Bernardtweet

Yes. That is a tweet to me from the one and only Mr Bernard Butler, and yes he has used the hashtag #selfieboobs. I don’t know why. I don’t care why. All I know is that little old me over here has received a tweet from a musical hero and I am supermegaawesomely happy about it.

you’re standing on my neck…

la la laa la laaaa…*

Yes. I have been watching Daria again. ALL the Daria. Pretty sure I was some sort of cross between Daria and Jane in high school. No bad thing really, not that I realised it at the time.

It’s been another month, hasn’t it? Except the DPU post, of course. I am seriously crap at this, and I’m getting worse. I haven’t even taken as many photos of cats as I usually do!

I’ve been having amazing project ideas, usually when driving, and they’ve been flying around my head for days. I sat down this evening to write them down or sketch them and *poof* they’re gone. I hate that. I really thought my creative block was gone but anything I had seems to have evaporated in this stupid heat. WTF actual British summer?! Do some rain or thunder or something and stop sapping my energy!

So, if you have any suggestions as to where my mojo may be hiding (I’ve looked in all the usual places – under the sofa, in the litter tray, behind Monty…) or indeed how YOU deal with extreme lack of motivation/ideas, please let me know. Tweet me @kulabeth or leave a comment here.

I know the first one is “unplug”. I know that.

*this is the La las from the Daria theme which is called You’re Standing On My Neck. It could be mistaken with the la las from Beautiful Ones, or indeed any other 90s song with la las in. But it’s not, it’s that one. Makes sense, see.

WI o’clock

We’ve had a busy month at Birchgrove WI. First we printed about a million flyers for our Spring Fair, then we had our AGM and birthday cake (it’s our 1st birthday!) and installed a new committee (which includes me, the new secretary. Oh yes.), and finally the Spring Fair last week. It was awesome.05-2013

It was a gorgeous sunny day, lots of people came and everyone had a good time. I had a stall with Ney and Shelley, we sold nothing (and bought EVERYTHING) but it was still fun. Ney and I are going to make more things now we know how other people do things. Also, we had some nice visual merchandising going on!DSC02040 DSC02042

At the AGM we had to vote to adopt the WI’s resolution for 2013/14 which is, essentially, Save Our High Streets, I like this resolution, I like it a lot. I’m not 100% certain as to how we’ll go about saving them but I guess everything starts at home so we’ll see. Looking forward to being a part of this.IMG_20130601_150241

May

I’m going to assume that I was busy in May. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.05-20131

May consisted of puppy, puppy, more puppy, puppy and friends, finally making a home for my blue tea set, meeting chickens and ducks, making things (at last!!!), lots of WI stuff and being obsessed about home furnishings. Oh, and obscene salads.
