In which Bethy gets a new toy

I have a gadget. It is a Sony Xperia S and it is lovely.

Ooh shiny! Of course Pickle is my wallpaper [as an aside, I absolutely hate it when people call their background picture a “screensaver”. It’s not a screensaver, it’s wallpaper. Argh!] and I’ve got We Are Young by .Fun as my ringtone because I fricking love that song! Anyway, I know nothing about phones.  I love technology but mobile phones have just never been of any massive interest really. Until now. This phone is awesome. Even the Boy is jealous of it, and he loves his iPhone (even though mine has the apps and the wifis and the bigger geebees – seriously, watch this vid, it’s hilarious). Also, I can almost be a hipster – at 29 I’m too old to be a hipster, and it’s not an iPhone – and can Instagram photos of my Starbucks like this:

Oh yeah, down with the kids.  I want a little Android figure now. The android is well cute, and I like robots.

By contrast, my PC is being an arse. Today, as it has been doing for some time now it decided to “lose” the wireless card again while I was downloading software (shiny new phone does not do CDs) so now I have the longest ethernet cable in the world running under the TV and sofa to my computer. Lose that stupid old PC. Ha. The upshot is that the internet has been fine all day… and I’ve been too busy with my shiny new toy to care much anyway! 🙂

Mr Phone Shop Man suggested this phone because it has a 12MP camera on it, and considering that my high-end point and shoot is 16MP I was reasonably impressed by this. I haven’t really had a chance to play properly yet but no doubt it’ll be invaluable, and a million times better than the camera on my Blackberry which, let’s face it, is a bag of crap.

In other exciting news, I made a cushion the other day!

It’s orange with birds on. What’s not to love? The fabric is from Ikea, £5.99 a metre. I bought 2 metres and will probably get 4 cushions out of it. Amazeballs. Envelope cushion covers are very easy to make, provided that your sewing machine plays nicely which mine didn’t and I ended up spending 40 minutes ripping out stitches because the bloody thing decided to knot about a foot of cotton into itself. Grr.

in which Bethy is a hazy shade of winter

Beautiful autumn day today. Or is it winter? I can’t really tell. It’s either a cold autumn day or a mild winter day. Either way it’s lovely out there. Won’t be so lovely later when all the sodding fireworks start but there we go.

I finally got my Red Cup. Oh Toffee Nut Latte I have missed you!Ant had a Gingerbread Latte which was quite nice but no Toffee Nut. It’s a shame that they don’t do sugar-free Toffee Nut. They can do a pseudo sugar-free one with caramel and hazelnut syrups but it’s not the same, and it has to have the sprinkles. Yay the sprinkles! The sprinkles of joy. Last year the baristas on Wellfield Road would give me extra sprinkles. This was a very happy thing.

Look at the Christmas goodies!

I want one of the mugs with a candy cane handle. They’ve also got a mug with what appears to be a Beagle on a sled. Happy times right there. Starbucks are doing buy one get one free on Red Cups between 2pm-5pm until tomorrow. People were queuing out the door of some stores in town. We went to the one that no one goes to, the one on Queen Street by McDonalds.  We saw this guy who obviously decided that BOGOF means he gets lots of coffee. I thought he looked like Moss from The IT Crowd. Not sure what he was drawing, some sort of symmetrical architecture.

There’s a noodle place on Queen Street now. It sells stuff in the proper boxes like they have in America. This is a pleasing thing. Not so pleasing were the millions of emos lurking everywhere. Someone needs to tell them that they don’t need to wear all the clothes from Blue Banana at the same time, and that a tiger onesie is not suitable attire for hanging around the castle grounds. It amazes me how, in order to “be different”, they all have to look the same.

I finally fixed the wireless properly. After my joy of fixing it last night with the help of a Liverpudlian called Tommy on the phone, the dongle once again ate the network and created it’s own that cut all the other computers off. So I took it back and got a PCI card which works a treat. Clever me, still got it nearly 10 years after becoming the first person in Dixons Cardiff to set up a wireless network. *smug*

Monty is hiding under the TV because of the fireworks. He hates them. Pickle’s not so fussed, she jumps at the really big bangs but otherwise is contentedly sleeping on the back of the sofa.

Finally, here’s a pressie for you – The Bangles – Hazy Shade of Winter. I love the Simon & Garfunkel original but this version is really good for stomping through leaves on the way to work.

in which Bethy gets a new router and it still doesn’t work

Yes, we are having technical issues at the Home of the Orange Ones. First I had to restore BigMalcolm (my PC), then he lost his internal wireless card so I had to get a new one which is a dongle thing. Then Ant spent about 8 hours trying to get the dongle to work, which ended up murdering our wireless network. No, I don’t know how either. After much swearing we connected up our old G router which works just fine. I called Virgin who tested the line and figured that the router had conked out and a new one arrived today. Guess what – this one doesn’t work either. You get so far with the installation and then it loses it’s connection with the cable modem. Yes, the cable modem that’s connected to it WITH A WIRE! It does it on Ant’s Mac and my PC so it’s not us, and so we’re back on the old slower router. Unacceptable much? Yes it is, especially as I’m paying for a faster line. Grrr. It’s also too late to ring them now so it’ll have to wait ’til I get in tomorrow. Oh, did I mention that the new router materialised at some point between 5.30pm and 9.30pm but no one left a card or rang the bell – it was waiting outside when Ant got in from his class, so thank you combined efforts of Yodel and my neighbours, thank you for keeping my router overnight without telling me, thank you in the arse.

Work today was pretty sucky – one of my friends was made redundant which is about the suckiest work news you can get at 10am. Go work with your mad motivational skills. Go. I continue to search for a better life.

In happier news, Dinosaur Pile Up will be back in Cardiff on November 28th. Yay! You may recall them from this post back in May. We love this band. You should love them too. Go listen to them, they rock!

I am trying to finish embroidering on a tote bag but have been unable to do so due to the sudden presence of a Pickle on my lap. Oh well.
